How it works
Many sites ask for a six-digit code after your password. That code comes from a setup key the site gives you once, usually as a QR code. Save the setup key on the login in Vikela and the vault shows the live code, with a countdown, whenever you open it. The code is worked out on your device; the setup key is encrypted like everything else in your vault.
Add a code to a login
- On the website, open its security settings and turn on two-step login with an authenticator app.
- When it shows a QR code, look for a link like Can't scan it? or Enter a key manually and copy the key.
- In Vikela, open the login, choose Edit, and paste the key into Authenticator key (TOTP). A full
otpauth://link works too. Save. - Vikela now shows a live code on the login. Type it into the website to finish setting up.
Save the backup codes too
Most sites also give you a list of one-time backup codes. Paste them into the login's notes for now, so they're safe if you lose access.
Coming soon Backup codes as their own item: tick off each code as you use it, and we warn you at three left.
Sharing codes with your team
Put the login in a shared folder and everyone with access to it can see the live code. No more phoning the one person with the right phone.
Coming soon A Codes page that lists every live code you're allowed to use, in one place.
Text-message and email codes
Vikela doesn't collect codes sent by SMS or email. To keep every code end-to-end encrypted, we chose not to pass them through our server. Where a site offers it, switch the account to an authenticator app code and save the setup key in Vikela instead.
